TV Edits of the Viewtiful Joe Anime: Episode 16

Joe and Junior travel to a flower field where a mysterious girl with magic powers named Alisa protects a miracle flower that never blooms.  This flower is supposed to allow for fairies to come to the human world.  Inconveniently this is right before Charles goes after it for an ingredient in his potion.

When Joe stretches after waking up in front of the tent, he notices that Alisa vandalized the tent with a crude picture of her making the eyelid pull taunt, also known as akanbe, with both fingers.  The fingers are positioned in the middle of the crudely drawn hands and can thus look like she's also flipping off with both fingers so in the English version it cuts right before Joe sees it and goes into the rest of Alisa's tricks.

Subsequently, the drawing is edited out of the shot showing Joe making stew and it's changed to a still shot instead of a panning shot to make the editing easier.

In the flashback with Elisa talking to the Fairy Queen(?), the queen in the Japanese version says nothing.  Her lips move, but nothing comes out yet somehow Elisa can understand her.  My only guess as to why this was done is it was to hide Elisa's true identity, but he English version makes her actually say something without giving it away.

When the fairy queen is talking in the present at the end of the episode, the Japanese version emphasizes that she's a chatterbox and there's a shot of Joe and Junior staring in disbelief at her, probably because that's not what they expected from fairies at all.  Then two younger fairies tell Alisa it's time to come back, leading to the reveal.  The English version still has the queen talk kind of fast, but they cut her dialogue down to just the relevant parts and the shot with Joe and Junior is taken out.

Alisa's explanation about her plight after she's taken fairy form is longer in the Japanese version and has her friends chiming into the explanation.  The English version shortens it.  This episode cut out so little they had to save time somewhere.

That's it.  Not a lot of editing in this episode at all.  The English version lucked out with all of the Verdy Jet's bombs being multicolored with colorful explosions instead of any realistic weaponry.  None of the violence had to be changed, save a hit flash when Alisa kicks Joe.
